How Are You Saved?

On its own, James seems to give a very clear way we can 'prove' our salvation. However, if you compare his words of salvation by 'what people do' with Paul's words that salvation is by faith 'apart from works', then things seem to get confusing. So how is one saved, exactly? And how can we know for certain?
